Is It Bad for MTV to be in other Countries

If you watch MTV we all know that most of the shows on their inappropriate or not good for younger viewers. Many of the shows on MTV have content that should not be aired on any network let alone in easy reach of young kids. If it is not good for even American kids or young adults why should it be viewed in other countries? In many other countries they have stricter policies and beliefs than what MTV reflects in the majority of their shows. Many of the shows on MTV make things such as teen pregnancy and rebellious behavior something that is accepted and encouraged by most of the people that participate in the shows. On the MTV Asia website you can find such articles as big American celebrities getting in trouble and all the bad things they have done.

MTV in China

MTV is phenomenal in the United States, it has everything a teen or young adult would like. From their favorite music videos to their favorite TV shows. There is a lot of very popular TV shows and music videos that people around the country like too. It's not just for Americans other people are interested in the shows and music as well. The teens and young adults in China, like MTV so much that they are trying to get the show to China so they can watch it live in their country. "MTV Networks Asia has launched its fourth Web site in the region, this time targeting the mainland Chinese market."(Mok, Davena 1)Right now they can stream the videos and shows from their computer through the internet on MTVs website, but they can’t get it there locally yet. In China they can get ringtones sent to their phone from MTVs cell phone ringtones. Many people in China like the American MTV shows, but are it good their watching shows that make Americans look uncivilized and sometimes dumb.

MTV Around the World

MTV is not just in the US it is all over the world and trying to expand all the time. "MTV networks International now broadcasts across 62 MTV channels in 162 countries."(SeungHO Cho and Jee Young Chung 323) MTV has a great business strategy by extending their market into foreign countries. By giving people in other countries the oppertunity to watch and enjoy the shows and music that Americans do and the shows and music they like as well. It gives Americans that are visiting on other foreign countries the oppertunity to watch and enjoy the same shows they could watch back in the states. If Americans are stationed in different countries or just there for work and they like MTV it gives them a chance to catch up on the shows they missed and the new music that is out. They can watch or listen by getting on MTV's webiste or on the channel if they are in a country that allows MTV.

MTV Expansion

Over the last twenty years MTV has expanded globally starting with the USA on August 1, 1981 followed by India in 1996, The Middle East, Italy in 1997, Brazil, and the Russia. MTV was available to many of the cities in these countries and "available in 18 different languages and is seen in 374.7 million households 164 countries 33." (Judy McGrath 2) "MTV went to Spain because it's the world's eighth-largest music sales market and also because digital TV via satellite there is among the most established services in Europe."(Dezzani, Mark 2) MTV is among one of the most popular and expanding network in the world and is getting larger.

Parents and MTV

World wide most people can agree that MTV is a bad influence on kids. Imagine if you were in another country and viewed MTV you would already have preconceived idea of what MTV is and what it represents. Many views that are portrayed in the shows are things that you would not want your children exposed to, but many people come into contact with it. "Educate parents on the two-fold power of MTV. On the one hand, it is a powerful teacher and reality definer, shaping our kids and the world in which they live. Researchers have found that the marriage of television and music is powerful as multisensory input reinforces the music's content and message. On the other hand, MTV offers a concerned parent a bird's-eye view into the values, attitudes, and behaviors of today's children and teens." (Walt Mueller 1-2) MTV could have an effect on your child. Many kids do what they see on TV because they think it’s cool, and they look up to the person that is doing the uncharacteristic act.
